Life and Art

In my work I have been influenced by artists from across the world, some of which I have studied in depth and others who have stuck with me from no more than a momentary appreciation through a social media platform. In my recent work, exploring femininity and the male gaze, South African painter Lisa Brice has helped me to delve into such themes. I first encountered her work on a gallery visit to The Hepworth Wakefield, and was fascinated by both her loose and multi-layered painting style. My understanding of contemporary art has also been benefitted by looking into the Elephant magazine online, where I have encountered articles on upcoming artists and what they explore, as well as on exhibitions and how they are rooted in politics. One article that sparked my interest is “Celebrating Nasty Women in All Their Glory”, an exhibition at Gavlak Los Angeles that displays the works of female art makers over the past 500 years. Alongside this, growing up as my mother practiced art has given me great insight into what it means to engage and work with fellow artists.
